SPORT: Local cricket to expand beyond Newcastle
With the cricket season set to begin in October, Ferreira stated there were 12 clubs waiting in anticipation for the matches to begin.
Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) has much to look forward to in the upcoming cricket season, according to NDCA President, Johan Ferreira, because Newcastle had achieved KwaZulu-Natal Premier League Status.
While the process was currently being finalised, this could see local players having the opportunity to compete in Pietermaritzburg.
“The league will also open the door for cricketers, putting them on the fast track to be spotted and have the chance to play for the Inlands teams,” said Ferreira.
This also meant there would be two NDCA teams, one which would be focused on competing in Pietermartizburg and second which would compete in Newcastle.

There would be five competitions, which formed the Saturday League and Night League Fixtures. The cricket season would then come to an end in March next year, with a six-a-side competition, where 18 teams would have to compete for first place.
With high hopes for the upcoming season, Ferreira said a coach would be needed to assist in training the teams.
“If anyone, especially older cricket players, can assist, they can contact me, as we would really like to see cricket grow in Newcastle.”
