SPORT: Ebert tee’s off to a hole-in-one

Taking to the greens is most certainly what 28-year-old Newcastillian, Ebert Koorts does best.

However, Ebert said when growing up he was more of a rugby player rather than golf enthusiast.

In later years because of the injuries brought on him by playing rugby, he soon realised he had better pursue a a new sport.

This is when he was introduced by a friend to golf.

“My friend played the sport and invited me to join him for a game. From that moment on I knew this was my new passion.”

Ebert considered himself a very competitive player, as he saw every game as an opportunity to better his skills.

Not only did Ebert embrace the sport on the fairway, he said he relaxed at home by watching golf as often as he could.

When asked who was his role model in the golf world, Ebert said that 28-year-old Rory Mcilroy was the man he admired in the golfing fraternity.

“He is such an amazing player. His skills are flawless and aggressive and one can see he plays with passion and enthusiasm. He is also my age, so it’s motivating to know even the young can succeed in the sport.”

Ebert admitted he would like to take his golfing to a more professional level one day, but for now he is happy sticking to his local club.”

When Ebert is not on the golf course, he can be found at a normal 9 to five job working as a fitter at ArcelorMittal.

Ebert is also a happily married man, who married the woman of his dreams, Bejanka, last year, after dating for nearly eight years.

Although they have not yet added to their family, Ebert said there was a plan in the pipeline to start a family in the near future.

“I am very lucky to have met and married the most perfect woman in my eyes. She fully supports me in my passion for golf, and even joins me for a game or two every now and then.”

His other driving force in the golfing world was his father, who was also an avid golfer.

“I spend lots of time on the golf course with him, and he has taught me many aspects of the sport, and I enjoy the quality time with him.”

“But one can also say the passion for the sport was passed down from father to son, although my passion only kicked in much later than his.”

Ebert’s advice to young aspiring golfers was to always enjoy the sport.

“Be yourself on the course and play your heart out. Embrace the sport fully and most importantly, always have fun.”

Wherever he may end up in life, one thing is for sure; the name Ebert Koorts will be a name to remember, and one we will be reading about for many years to come.
