SPORTS: Cyclists take a ride under the starry night
Cyclists were led by glow sticks on a course down staircases, across makeshift bridges, up and over mounds of sand en route to the finish line.
Drakensberg Primary School kicked off its weekend in a celebratory way.
Cyclists of all ages and skill levels arrived at the school on Friday night, to compete in its first ever Night Cycle Race through corridors and across the grounds.
This formed part of the school’s Buitelugfees (outdoor festival).
Cyclists were led by glow sticks on a course down staircases, across makeshift bridges, up and over mounds of sand en route to the finish line.
Principal, Pieter Hanekom elaborated on the event.
“This is our first night cycle and obviously it’s a learning curve. The course was designed by the team from Triathlon Cycles and people are really enjoying it.”
Hanekom explained the Night Cycle Race was a precursor to the Buitelugfees, which featured market stalls, singers, inflatables and other entertainment.
The event also featured a 4×4 adventure track.
Hanekom said the event was headlined by three talented singers in Rikus Nel, his wife, Liza Bronner and Monique, notable names in the Afrikaans music industry.
“We’ve enjoyed a great turnout and want to thank the community for its support.”
