NFWAA anglers are casting off ahead of the final league for the season.

Competition in local angling circles is heating up.

The penultimate round of the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) League was held at Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam recently, with a full field of teams eager to cast off.

Allocation of the five zones was done by a lottery system.

Once the lines were cast, anglers had long intervals between bites and those with the right bait and the right timing, reeled in the most fish.

Tension at the weigh-in was palpable.

With the top three teams in the NFWAA League separated by only two points, Docrats Angling Club was the only team this season to have won successive leagues.

This made the team favourites to bag the fifth and final league title.

True to current form, Docrats finished with 60 combined points to take top honours, followed by Chelmsford AC on 52 points and Itec Freespool on 40.

Riverside and Endumeni finished in joint fourth position.

Despite being reigning champion, Freespool is currently suffering a dip in form and has found itself in a three-way tie with for the top position.

Organisers said this meant the season was poised for an exciting climax.

“The prize for the heaviest carp was won by Aveen Jagath of Docrats, with Hein Dahms of Chelmsford winning the prize for the heaviest non-scaled fish.”

Riverside will host an overnight open competition at Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam on March 3 and 4, with over R60 000 in prizes up for grabs.

The main prize is a massive R25 000 for the heaviest carp.

“The competition will also incorporate the now-popular ‘skins’ competition as well.”
