THE Vryheid Bowling Club’s Autumn Business League commenced on February 27 with the silent auction of skips for each business team.
We welcome on board three businesses competing for the first time – namely NTT Toyota, Ritchie Ford and ABSA Bank, as well as FNB who have not competed for a few years. The defending champs, Pick ‘n Pay, skippered by Jan de Lange, with team members, Bert-Jan and Herman, are the team to beat. It is all on the day – there are many strong teams competing. Read the weekly report over the next four weeks in the Vryheid Herald of the progress of the league and the keen competition between businesses.

During the month of February, the Vryheid Bowling Club was extremely active with several competitions. The club Handicap Singles, held on February 10 and 11, has previously been reported on. The club mixed pairs competition on February 17 and 18 was well represented with 12 teams competing. The playoff was a very keenly contested game, the result being determined on the last end with Hogart and Hannah Gevers the victors. Henry Klofta and Margaret van Heusden were the runners up.
The Vryheid Bowling Club hosted the Zone Mixed Pairs over the week end of February 24 and 25. Well done to Dries Els for your hard work and excellent preparation of the club grounds and greens. 32 teams – a record entry – from Piet Retief, Pongola, Dundee, Newcastle, Volksrust and Vryheid competed. There was excellent bowling over the two days with a particularly good game in the final played in wet conditions, again decided on the last end. Congratulations to Philip Scheepers (Vryheid) and Cornel van Wyk (Vryheid) on your success. Trevor Smale (Newcastle) and Noela Dreyer (Vryheid) were the deserving runner up team.
We look forward to this coming Saturday, March 10, when the Vryheid Bowling Club is hosting the Pick ‘n Pay sponsored day. 28 teams have entered from all the towns mentioned earlier, as well as St Lucia.
Good Bowling.
