Local bowlers shine at District Playoffs

The KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Open and Senior Singles District Playoffs were held at Klipbank Bowling Club last weekend, in very sultry conditions.

The Women’s Open title was won by young Fran Baleri (Klipbank 8 + 13), with Alice Howe (Newcastle 6 + 19) the runner-up.

The Men’s Open results saw senior players dominate, with Newcastle’s Trevor Smale (8 + 17) and Ron Howe (6 + 12) finishing as winner and runner-up respectively.

Midlands players continued their good form in the Seniors events, with Veronica Malan (Klipbank 8 + 26) winning the Women’s Senior title on a count-out from Anita Scott (Richards Bay 8 + 26).

The only unbeaten player of the weekend, Phil Rooke (Bergville 10 + 26) won the Men’s Senior title, followed by Barry Mutlow (Richards Bay 6 + 27).

The South African Inter District Open and Senior tournaments start next Monday, with the Open event being in held in George for men and Oudtshoorn for women.

The B tournament takes place in Johannesburg and the senior teams will be hosted by Port Natal in Durban.

Newcastle bowlers in participation: Alice Howe and Samantha Shaw (Women’s Open), Michelle Steele and Sue Hutchinson (Women’s B), Dorothy Crosbie and Marie Botha (Women’s Senior), John Douthwaite (Men’s Open), Stephen Shaw (Men’s B) and Trevor Douthwaite (Men’s Senior) and their teams are all wished good bowling.
