Amajuba’s gymnastics future shines with new high-performance programme

Gymnastics coach, Xolani Magwaza launched a high-performance gymnastics programme at the Arbor Park Recreation Centre on March 1.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Magwaza said the programme is designed to cater to all children across schools, including those in special needs schools.

“Our goal is to make gymnastics accessible to everyone, including the elderly and individuals with special needs,” he explained. “The high-performance aspect of the programme focuses on nurturing young talent, from ages 5 to 18, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds who have had limited exposure to gymnastics.”

Sbonga Zwane is one of the young talents benefiting from gymnastics over the past three years. Having practised gymnastics for three years, Sbonga’s dedication has already led to impressive achievements, including competing at the provincial level where last year he won a silver medal in his category.

“I love gymnastics, and I’m grateful for programs like this that will help me achieve my dream of joining Team SA,” said Sbonga, reflecting on his passion for the sport and the opportunities it has opened up for him.

Xolani Magwaza urged parents who believe their children have the potential to join the programme.

“Please bring your children to train with us. We offer training sessions every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the centre,” he said.

The group is preparing for several upcoming competitions, including the Youth Olympics in Senegal 2026. In May, the first trials for skipping rope to qualify for the Youth Olympics will be held.

“Competitions like these are where athletes are scouted for Team SA which is our ultimate goal and we are proud that three of our boys have already qualified for Senegal.”

Magwaza has urged the community to stay connected and follow the programme on social media to track the progress and achievements of the children involved. “By engaging with us online, you can witness the growth and success of these young talents and become a part of this exciting initiative,” Magwaza said.
