Newcastle bowling club hosts thrilling club novice championships

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted their Club Novice singles championships this past weekend, with the field limited to players who have been playing for less than three years.

Playing in a round robin format, the ladies’ competition was a closely fought affair with three of the four players ending with two victories and one loss and the winner was decided on shot difference.

Mariska du Bruyn on 4 + 17 was the deserved winner, followed by Bebsie Cronje (4 + 2) as runner-up and Cherece Delport (4-5) in third place.

The men’s section followed a similar trend, with 4 of the 5 players being in contention with one game to play. In the final game, Peet du Bruyn had a good win to become the only player to win four of his five games, finishing on six points +27 to annexe the title.

The runners-up spot was determined on shot difference, with John Bain (4 + 1) edging out Chris White (4 – 2) and Jaco Lamprecht (4 – 0) in third place. Peet and Mariska thus became the first father and daughter to win the novice titles in the same year.

The KZNCB mixed pairs playoffs take place at The Nest Bowling Club on Thursday and Friday. Ron and Alice Howe qualified as winners of the Northern zone and are wished good bowling for the tournament.

The KZNCB inter-zone competition follows on Saturday and Sunday. The following Newcastle BC bowlers will be playing for the Northern Zone and will be doing their best to get the better of the Zululand and Midlands zones: Grant Teasdale, Paul and Nicola Redlinghuys, Lukas Niemand, James Dlamini, Koen and Edith Pretorius, Denise Phillips, Mariska Kuhn and John and Trevor Douthwaite.
