Bowling Club Championship finale thrills local crowd
Newcastle Bowling Club was a hub of activity last weekend with 30 men and nine ladies all vying for the top spot in the Club Singles Championships.
The ladies section was divided into three sections, with Alice Howe, Edith Pretorius, and Joan Schoon coming out on top in each. The three then competed in another round robin format to determine the overall winner.
The final game between Alice and Edith would be the deciding factor, as both had won their initial games. Edith maintained her outstanding form to gain an early lead, and despite Alice’s determined comeback, she won the title for the first time.
The 10 section winners in the men’s event were Bennie van Vuuren, Trevor Hutchinson, Trevor Douthwaite, Priester de Bruin, Adrian van der Merwe, Gert Roos, Trevor Smale, Ron Howe, James Dlamini, and John Douthwaite.
A positive note was the performance of many new members in sectional play, which bodes well for the club’s future strength. In the preliminary round of the knockout stages, Priester defeated Trevor D while Trevor Smale edged Gert out.
The quarter-finals then began, with Bennie defeating a determined Trevor Hutchinson, Adrian defeating Priester, Ron narrowly defeating Trevor Smale, and John defeating James, who played remarkably well despite losing. These results set up an interesting semi-final, with four past winners remaining.
Bennie won a close game against Adrian, while John defeated Ron. The final was an exciting match, with John establishing an early lead before Bennie found his rhythm and clawed his way back into contention.
At 15 all, it was anyone’s game, but the more consistent Bennie finished off a tired John, scoring the next six strokes to rightly maintain his title as Club Champion. A pleasant crowd of spectators contributed to the atmosphere of a well-run competition.
