Reinhardt and Essie clinch Northern Zone Veterans Singles titles

Northern Zone bowlers travelled to Volksrust Bowling Club last weekend to participate in the Northern Zone Veterans Singles Championships.
The sectional playoffs on Saturday saw the following section winners qualify for the knock-out playoffs to be held on Sunday: Ron Howe, Grant Teasdale, Fritz Botha, Peet du Bruyn, Trevor Smale (all Newcastle), Abraham Louw (Volksrust), Reinhardt van Aswegen and Dougie Slabbert (both Dundee).
Quarter finals then saw Ron beat Grant, Abraham beat Fritz, Reinhardt edge out Peet and Dougie beat Trevor.
Ron then ousted Abraham and Reinhardt got the better of Dougie.
The final between the defending champion Ron and newcomer Reinhardt was played in blustery conditions and was a close-fought affair.
Reinhardt went into an early 15-8 lead before Ron made a determined comeback to be only one shot down at 15-16.
Reinhardt then took took 4 more shots to take a 20-15 lead, with Ron then scoring 2 more before Reinhardt scored the winning shot to lift the title.
The ladies section winners, Essie Slabbert (Dundee), Susan Strydom (Ncandu) and Edith Pretorius (Newcastle), then played a further round robin to determine the winner.
With Essie and Edith both edging out Susan in their games, the last game between Essie and Edith was going to be the decider.
Essie was the first to settle into her groove in difficult playing conditions and took an early lead, which she never relented despite a brief comeback from Edith to win the ladies title.
The winners and runners-up of the men’s and ladies sections now qualify to play in the KZNCB playoffs to be held in Dundee at the end of July.
On the local front the monthly Eagle Peak Sur competition saw Alice Howe, Michael McArthur, Priester De Bruyn and Ron Farnham take home the chickens!
A number of Newcastle teams travel to Dundee this weekend to play in the NortherZone Fours competition.
