NKZNRU hosts AGM and celebrates season achievements

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union (NKZNRU) hosted its annual general meeting at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds, marking an important gathering for the region’s rugby community. All eight affiliated rugby clubs were in attendance.
NKZNRU President Peet van der Merwe opened the meeting by thanking the clubs for their unwavering commitment to rugby within the sub-unions.
He noted that the union had enjoyed a fair rugby season in 2025 and reflected on its highs and lows, along with plans for the year ahead.
The financial, rugby development, vice president, deputy president and chairman’s reports were then presented, each outlining achievements and challenges over the past year.
Van der Merwe extended his appreciation to the players, referees, assistant referees, first-aid teams, club management, council members, André Swanepoel, administrative staff and the spouses of all players and members for their continued support, dedication and commitment to both the sport and the union.

During the AGM, the committee for the 2025/2026 term was confirmed as follows:
- President: Peet van der Merwe
- Vice President: Mandla Mtshali
- Vice President of Finance: Jaco van Staaden
- Vice President of Rugby: André Swanepoel
- Additional KZN Member: Alistair van Wyk
Following the formalities, an official prize-giving ceremony recognised outstanding performances from the 2024 rugby season:
- 1st Division League Winner: Piet Retief
- 2nd Division League Winner: Piet Retief
- 3rd Division League Winner: Newcastle Highlanders 4
- Women’s Division League Winner: Highlanders Rugby Club
- All Players Representing: NKZNRSU (Kokstad Medal)
- DSAC Tournament Winner: Newcastle Highlanders Women’s Team
- NKZN Junior Coach: Marcel Swartz
- NKZN Senior Coach: Sabelo Konjelwayo
- Senior Forward Player: JC Botha
- Senior Backline Player: Shaka Nkosi
The evening concluded with a lively braai, refreshments and warm camaraderie, celebrating not only the season’s successes but also the strong bonds formed through rugby.
