Teenage girl plays cricket with the grownups
She was selected for the team primarily on account of her spin bowling skills, having taken many prized wickets over the years
Young and talented Ladysmith lass Aqeela Moola has made the Inland Women’s Cricket Team. This is a great achievement for a 16-year-old!
Aqeela says she was basically born with a bat and ball in her hands. She started playing cricket under the guidance of the Ladysmith Cricket Academy (LCA) at the tender age of five years old. In grade 6, at the age of 11, she made the Under 13 Inland Girls’ side, repeating this achievement in grade 7. She was deemed too small to play in her grade 8 year, but that all changed in grade 9 and she showed her calibre by making the Inland Girls’ Under 19 team at the age of only 14. Aqeela once again made the team in her grade 10 year.
2013 was Aqeela’s year to really shine! Now in grade 11 at Ladysmith High School (LHS), she made the Inland Women’s side. So far she has played three games for the women’s team in Pietermaritzburg, Kimberley and Bloemfontein. She was selected for the team primarily on account of her spin bowling skills, having taken many prized wickets over the years.
Aqeela has big plans for the future. She wants to go to Pietermaritzburg to study Law and would also like to further her cricketing career once she finishes school. She would like to thank her coaches for all the support and skills they have given her. Watch out for this young lady in the cricketing world! If she can play in the women’s team at 16, captaining the national team can’t be far off!
