Nothing fishy about angling winners
Anglers from across the area flocked to the generously sponsored competition.
Determination and commitment defined competitors at Stillwaters Angling Club’s Open Competition in late November.
Hopefuls camped outside the gates of the Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam reserve almost a week ahead of the competition, while one cycled all the way from Ballengeich to prove his worth with fishing rod in hand.
The weather, however, had other plans for the weekend.
Although the fish did not bite very often, Gellie van Heerden reeled in the three biggest carp of the day, all weighing more than four kilogrammes, to bag a total of R30 000 in prize money.
With a carp of 3,74kg, Kaveer Singh is now the proud owner of a new lounge suite.
In the non-scaled section, Dinesh Govender caught of barbel of 6,72kg to win himself the handsome R10 000 prize, with Lishay Mahabeer and Shane Mangaroo taking home the R6 000 and R4 000 prizes respectively.
Winners of the ‘skins’ competition in the scaled category were Joey Singh, R. Bhondu, R Buduram and Kaveer Singh.
Conversely, the ‘skins’ winners in the non-scaled category were Akthar Allijan, D. Naidoo, Lolly Manohalal and Lishay Mahabeer, winning themselves R500 apiece.
The total value of the prize haul was almost R58 000.
Organisers of the competition said they had been kept busy throughout, with regular weigh-ins taking place.
“The ‘skins’ section of the competition drew great interest; it gave other anglers the opportunity to pocket some money despite not catching the ‘big one’.”
Stillwaters Angling Club would like to thank their many sponsors and prize donors who contributed both in cash and kind, competitors for braving the elements and officials who volunteered their assistance, working more than 24 hours on the trot.
