Prizes galore in angling competition
Anglers were afforded the opportunity of winning 60 prizes in total
The much talked about Open Competition of Stillwaters Angling Club took place on November 30 at Sandford.
There were many lucrative prizes on offer, including cash to the value of R58,000, a lounge suite and dining room suite, fridge, and eye-level stove and hob. Patrons gathered as early as the Tuesday afternoon to secure their spot in the queue. The days passed by slowly and finally the moment arrived as the gates opened at 8am on the Saturday, with anglers rushing frantically to secure their favourite spots. Anglers had to deal with poor weather conditions and poor catches.
The organisers were kept busy throughout the duration of the competition, as fish were weighed at regular intervals. The organisers are to be commended on their high standard of organisation exhibited throughout the competition. The ‘skins’ section of the competition drew great interest, as it gave anglers the opportunity to pocket some money although they may not have caught the big one overall in the competition.
Gellie van Heerdeen of Potchefstroom walked away with R30,000 in prize money, bagging the three biggest carps weighing 4.562kg; 4.390kg and 4.138kg. Kaveer Singh won the lounge suite with a carp of 3.743kg, followed by R Durgadin who won the dining room suite with a carp of 3.579kg.
In the non-scaled section, Dinesh Govender caught a barbel of 6.725kg and won himself a handsome sum of R10,000; Lishay Mahabeer caught a barbel of 6.640kg and won R6000; and Shane Mangaroo landed a barbel of 4.730kg to win R4000. SA Mohamed won the fridge, followed by Inayath Ahmed in fifth spot to win the eye-level stove and hob. Winners of the ‘skins’ competition in the scaled category were: Skin 1 – Joey Singh (2.980kg); Skin 2 – R Bhondu (3.258kg); Skin 3 – R Buduram (3.235kg); Skin 4 – Kaveer Singh (3.743kg), winning R1500 each. Non-scaled section: Skin 1 – Akthar Allijan (890g); Skin 2 – D Naidoo (2.420kg); Skin 3 – Lolly Manohalal (2.270kg); Skin 4 – Lishay Mahabeer (6.640kg), pocketing themselves R500 each.
Anglers were afforded the opportunity of winning 60 prizes in total. In addition, there were lucky ticket draws and special prizes for different categories.
