Cyclists leg it for cycle challenge
The Checkers and Waterside Cycle Challenge is enforcing new rules this year.
Cyclists are already in top gear ahead of February’s Checkers and Waterside Cycle Race.
The popular annual event takes place on February 16 across three distance categories, namely 85 kilometres, 60km and a fun ride of 20km for the less-serious athletes.
This year, due to limited rights to utilise the road, a cut-off time has been enforced.
Organisers said any cyclists who have not yet passed the intersection of the N11 and the Dannhauser road by 10.30am, will have to climb aboard the sweep vehicle.
To assist cyclists, water tables will be set up along the routes for maximum convenience.
Starting times for the various events are as follows: Men 85km (17-49) begin at 6.15am, men’s 85km (50-plus and women) from 6.25am, under-16 boys and girls and u-14 boys (60km) from 6.30am and the 60km open group from 6.40am.
Both the 20km road and off-road races begin at 7am, while the 6km sets off at 7.10am.
Cyclists can pre-enter the road races up until February 12 and unseated line entries on race morning will be accepted, and entries for the off-road events can only be made on the morning of the challenge.
Line entries for the 85km and 60km events can be done between 5am and 6am before the race.
Organisers explained no timing chips were required, as timing was being done through a computer/hand system, and all finishers will receive the newly-designed medal.
Lucky draws will also be taken on race day.
