Race day looms for athletes

The Mortimer Toyota Battlefields Marathon takes place on Saturday.

Athletes, don’t forget the Battlefields Marathon this Saturday!

The annual marathon’s organisers have mapped out a new route from Hutten Park Primary School along the D96, but will retain the three distance categories of 42 kilometres, 21km and 10 km.

This will make for a more scenic and less dangerous event for participants.

With great prize money up for grabs and medals for all finishers, the combination is a recipe for success, and veteran runner, Siggy Lauterbach said the new road meant perfect conditions.

He also mentioned the nine or so water tables along the route, to satisfy the needs of athletes.

However, Mr Lauterbach pleaded with runners to not discard water bags and other refuse on the road, as it became a difficult task for organisers to clean up afterward.
