Karate medalist at eight-years-old
JP Mostert earned provincial colours at a competition last weekend.
A brown belt at just eight years old, JP Mostert is Newcastle’s own ‘karate kid’.
Despite only four years of experience in the martial art discipline, young JP already boasts medals at provincial tournaments and KwaZulu-Natal colours to his name.
While his future is yet to be mapped out, proud coach Deon Claassen said JP is gifted with potential.
“JP trains twice a week and trained often during the December holidays. He is very dedicated.”
Sensei Deon said part of JP’s success was motivation from his parents, who have helped him enjoy practices.
His success, however, depends on JP himself, although Sensei Deon believes he could reach Protea level with the right combination of hard work and training.
Last weekend, for instance, he attended a national championship event in Bloemfontein, representing KZN.
While JP did not earn himself a medal at this competition, Sensei Deon said, “There were many competitors in his division, and he has earned a ton of experience for the next time.”
In January, JP earned a silver (kata) and bronze (kumite) at the provincial champs in Durban.
Explaining the relevance of karate, Sensei Deon said, “The most important parts of karate are discipline and self-respect. It teaches you nothing in life is easy and that it is not always about winning.”
With this sage advice to chew on, JP is a candidate for the list of sports stars of tomorrow.
