Rain spoils the excitement

Good luck to all the participants and safe travelling.

What a feast of bowls was had at The Nest over the weekend! The Midlands Mixed Pairs brought out the real fighting spirit in the teams that entered this championship event, making for really excellent bowls all round.

Of the 21 teams that entered, there were 11 pairs from Klipbank. Well done to all of those teams – you all gave a good account of yourselves. The draw resulted in seven sets of three teams that all played each other, and here we saw some really good games. For example, Eros Jannon and Janet Barnardo went out to Charlie and Ria Mapp after both teams ended on two points + 5 shots, but they lost to the Mapps in their initial game.

How close can you get! On Sunday morning, the quarter finals were: Jill Atkinson and Jimmy Nel vs Cor Kleynhans and Lorraine Kirsten; Barbara and Oscar Baleri vs Magriet Coetzee and Andries de Kock – this game peeled and had to play an extra end. Louis and Maritha Prinsloo vs Charlie & Ria Mapp – this game also peeled and had to have an extra end. Graham and Barbara Elworthy, having had the highest score in the previous games, went through to the semi-finals. Here, Jill and Jimmy played Barbara and Oscar, while Louis and Maritha played Graham and Barbara.

Such brilliant bowls from all these bowlers – AND THEN THE RAIN CAME DOWN. What an anti-climax to end this fantastic championship.

Now the matches will have to be re-scheduled for another date in order to achieve a final result. Watch this space.

The travels are on again this weekend, with all the KZN District teams travelling to Pietermaritzburg to contest the Quadrangular Tournament playing against Natal Inland, Port Natal and Kingfishers’ District teams. This is always a tough one, but very good practice for the teams before they all travel to the National Inter-Districts Championships in March. Good luck to all the participants and safe travelling.

Please make sure you have diarised the Valentine’s Day Curry & Rice being put on by Fatima Moola – your support for this function is most important.

The Spar Twilight League is getting underway on February 12 at 5pm and you must contact Lorraine Kirsten urgently to make sure your team is in the draw. Everyone knows how much this league adds to the enjoyment of mixing with new people – it is always such fun getting down to the club and seeing who is there this time. Jean Crane is available for coaching, so don’t delay – contact her for advance knowledge of the game.
