New talent bolsters Highlanders’ ranks
An average of 40 players are attending practices each week.

“A lot of new talent has joined our club for the 2014 season.”
This was the most recent quote by Boschpick Newcastle Highlanders’ head coach, Andre Swanepoel, boasting an average of 40 players at practices since the beginning of January.
Players are going through their phases ahead of the official trials on February 22 at the Arbor Park Grounds from 3pm.
After these trials, Highlanders will play in the following friendly matches:
March 1 – Ferrum Old Boys; March 8 – Piet Retief Rugby Day; March 14 to 16 – Zululand tour; March 20 to 22 – JBM Hertzog (UOVS) tour to Newcastle; March 28 – Jaguars.
These games will be critical in preparing for the kick-off of the league in April.
Mr Swanepoel mentioned there were other exciting events in the pipeline, including a bowls evening, which took place at the nearby Newcastle Bowling Club at the end of January.
On every match day, he continued, a lucky draw would be held.
The three people who have their lucky numbers drawn at the half-time break, will be allowed a shot at goal to perhaps win a hamper or voucher (prize to be announced).
“We want people to enjoy the rugby with us at the club and support the local team. We hope to see all rugby fans there!”
