Ferrum hosts regional hockey tourney
The school's teams have dominated this competition since its inception.
Newcastle will play host to the fourth annual SPAR KwaZulu-Natal Regional Hockey Tournament on February 22.
Ferrum High School was selected to stage this acclaimed competition this year, and dominated the region and all three of the previous tournaments since its inception.
A total of 10 schools are expected at the 2014 edition, with a chance to reach the finals in Durban this July.
Tournament director, Les Galloway said she was delighted to see the competition coming ‘into its own’, stating the combination of enjoyment and competitiveness was a pleasure to witness.
“The hockey we have seen over the past three years has greatly improved and this can only bode well for the future of KZN Hockey.”
In particular, Mrs Galloway singled out the growth in confidence and strength from the Ferrum players, describing them as a confident outfit with good strategy and great camaraderie.
“Newcastle has never disappointed us, with wonderful hockey for both players and the spectators.”
The tournament, organisers explained, was intended to highlight girls’ first team hockey in 10 regions across the province, incorporating Durban, Pietermaritzburg and NKZN.
SPAR Managing Director, Rob Philipson said the tournament was a highlight of a many sporting calendars.
“These young ladies are the future of our South African women’s team, and we are delighted to play a small role in moulding some of the country’s next top players.”
Final games will be played at Thomas Moore College and St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls on July 26 and 27.
