JKA prepped for provincial tournament

The tournament on March 15 will influence provincial team selections.

Ahead of a major tournament in Newcastle in March, local karateka are suited up for success.

On Saturday at the Arbor Park Primary School hall, black and brown belt karateka of the Japanese Karate Association (JKA) from across the country met for final training and advice before the Northern KwaZulu-Natal tournament on March 15.

Sensei Johan Swart said this tournament would ultimately influence selections for the provincial JKA team.

Earlier this year, a handful of Newcastle JKA members attended a course in Johannesburg to gain crucial knowledge of changes within the structure, and the style of JKA karate overall.

Thus, seniors were filled in on the information brought across during the Joburg session.

“The seniors have given back information to clubs across the area, including Secunda,” Sensei Johan explained.

Although the seniors had initially met to finalise plans for the tournament in March, Sensei Johan said the opportunity to communicate with other branches could not be passed up.

Further details of the NKZN tournament, he concluded, would be made available closer to the time.
