Local lads wrest Northerns title
The Newcastle team clawed back to draw level, before a purler was bowled.

After six rounds of play, the popular FedAuto Summer Business League is drawing to an exciting climax.
With just one round to be played before the finals evening clash between the two sections, at least three teams in each section are still in contention for the titles.
The Section 1 leaders are The Putt Putts (11 + 70) followed by The Hobos (9+36) and Polar Air (9 + 24).
Section 2 is led by The Handbrakes (11 + 68), with Karbochem Meerkatte (10 + 50) and NN Mowerman (9 + 55) in close contention, and Thursday will no doubt provide another evening of close fought tussles, mixed with fun and laughter.
There are two more rounds remaining, with the final of the business league scheduled for March 20.
Vryheid Bowling Club hosted the Northerns’ zone men’s and women’s fours competition last weekend, where Newcastle’s Sid Price, Koen Pretorious, Andy Crosbie and Bert Rodgers did well to win their section.
They narrowly lost to Vryheid’s Hogart Gevers, Phillip Scheepers, Soon Moolman and Harold Zoeppritz in the semi-final.
Norman Forbes, John Douthwaite, Trevor Douthwaite and Anil Durgadin won their section and had a bye into the final to face Hogart’s team, with the Vryheiders scoring on the first end and maintaining the lead for most of the game.
However, the Newcastle team soon clawed its way back to draw level at 13 apiece.
On the penultimate head, Norman played a purler with his last bowl to drag the jack back 15 centimetres to pick up six shots, which ultimately sealed the game and saw the team wrest the title from the defending champions.
Five women’s teams played a round robin format with points deciding the winners after the four rounds of play.
Going into the last round, three teams were still in contention, including Newcastle’s Sam Shaw, Dorothy Crosbie, Michelle Steele and Marie Botha, who played against Vryheid’s Ilva Zoeppritz, Bonita Wessells, Noeleen Jacoby and Estelle Dubber in what turned out to be the decider.
Ilva’s team won the game and the title, with Hannelie Arndt’s Dundee team finishing in second place.
The recent Newcastle Bowling Club tabs in chicken competition was won by the team of Tim Taylor, Piet Reyneke, Simon Ball and Tim Johnston – congratulations.
