Local cricket stalwart to receive administrator’s award

As the doyen of sports administrators in Natal, Mr Ahmed Kharva has reached another milestone in his distinguished and illustrious career with the announcement that he is to receive an Administrator’s Sports Award.
It is also a singular honour for Ladysmith that one of its most distinguished sons is being recognised for his 62 years of commitment to cricket. The award that Mr Kharva is going to receive is a fitting tribute to a man who has contributed immeasurably to the development of cricket at all levels. As a player of repute and an astute and articulate administrator, he has served the game with dedication and loyalty.
At local level, Mr Kharva has served the Northern Districts Cricket Union from 1952 to present, 62 years of unbroken service. He served as president for 27 years, the longest service in the union’s 86-year history. He has occupied positions in virtually all portfolios of this body, too numerous to mention. He is also currently a trustee of the union. In recognition of his service to cricket, the NDCU honoured him by electing him to the prestigious position of HLVP in 1972. At the age of 36, Mr Kharva became the youngest person to be elected to this most senior position, which he has now held for 42 years. He is also a skilled batsman, a useful all-rounder and a player of repute.
He began playing cricket at the age of 14 years old and carried on playing until he was 52. He recently displayed his prowess in the nets by being the oldest batsman (78) to have participated in the Guinness World Record attempt staged by the NDCU.
At regional level (Northern Natal), he made his mark by being elected chairman and selector of the combined Northern Natal Non-Racial Motivating Committee; and team selector, team manager and NDCU delegate of the Northern Natal Disciplinary & Finance Committee.
His illustrious career, spanning 62 years of continued service to cricket and the community, reflects a saga of devotion and a deep sense of dedication, sacrifice and determination. It is certain that when the history of cricket in Natal is written, the name of Ahmed Kharva will feature prominently.
