Young bowlers’ winning ways

The children played their hearts out and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The experience gained is invaluable

12 youngsters form part of the KZN Country bowls district.
They are from Estcourt, Colenso, Dundee, Piet Retief, Pongola and Empangeni.
They competed in the U/19 Bowls Development Tournament in Pietermaritzburg from April 1 to 4.
Only five of the children were there for their third time, for the rest it was a first.
There were 12 districts (20 teams) from around the country that competed.
The C team ended 19th overall.
The four of them have only been playing bowls for five months.
The A team lost three of the nine games they played and ended fifth overall.
Only seven points separated first and fifth place in their section.
The B team, skipped by Duncan, lost only one of their nine games and ended on top of their section.
Nine points separated first and second in that section.
That meant that they had to play in the final on Friday against a very competitive and experienced team from Johannesburg bowls association.
The team did not panic, stayed focussed and won the game 22 – 18 after 21 ends.
It is the first time since the inception of this tournament that KZN Country takes the gold.
The children played their hearts out and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The experience gained is invaluable. A great ending to four of the team’s U/19 career.
The children would like to thank each and every one that contributed to make it possible for them to attend.
Everyone that bought a raffle ticket, donated money and for the moral support.
The team really appreciates everything that was done. Now we wait for next year.
“Bowls is a young mans sport that can be played by old people.”
