Karateka find the correct stance

Members of the local JKA dojo earned a plethora of medals at the NKZN Championships.

More than 200 entrants attended the Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Championships earlier this month.

Competitors at the event represented a host of affiliated clubs including Dundee, Hluhluwe, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Paulpietersburg, Piet Retief, Pongola, Secunda, Volksrust and Vryheid.

The following Newcastle karateka attended the championships and earned various distinctions:

Abigail Skinner: bronze in kata; Anthony van der Watt: gold in kata;

Canzias Erwee: bronze in kata; Corné Swart: silver in kata and gold in kumite;

Darren Arends: gold in kata and silver in kumite; Delarey Hugo: bronze in kumite;

Faathima Moosa: bronze in kumite; Gideon de Villiers: bronze in kata and silver in kumite;

Ipeleng Mosupye: silver in kata and silver in kumite; Jaco Maritz: gold in kata and kumite;

Jamie Steenkamp: gold in kata and bronze in kumite; Jason Arends: gold in kata and kumite;

Jaydene Naidoo: silver in kata and silver in kumite; Joshua Roderick: bronze in kata;

Kaylin Le Roux: gold in kumite; Khulakahle Ndlovu: bronze in kata;

Linda Ndlovu: bronze in kumite; Marco Swart: gold in kata and silver in kumite;

Stephen Blair: bronze in kata and kumite; Tasmay Ramsamy: gold in kata and silver in kumite;

Trishique Ramsamy: bronze in kata and silver in kumite; Zandile Sithole: silver in kata and bronze in kumite;

Zian Rothman: gold in kata and silver in kumite.

Local, Angus Burns had to settle for a silver medal in the men’s open kumite division after losing to Andries Fourie, who achieved the gold medal in a nail-biting final.

Andries was later presented with the trophy for the best male in the open division.

This brings the total number of medals for the Newcastle dojo to 62, and all medal winners have since been selected to represent NKZN at the South African National JKA Championships.

This competition will be held on May 23 and 24 at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg.
