Headliners find the back of the net
The Newcastle Social Soccer League's pre-season tourney crossed the chalk last Sunday.
With a pre-season tournament last Sunday, soccer stars were reminded that the ball is indeed round.
Ahead of the launch of this year’s Newcastle Social Soccer League next week, eight of the best local sides competed in a two-stream tournament at the Paradise Grounds.
The first group included veteran club Stella, strong contenders Spartans and Al-Ahly and maiden team, Emathekini.
In the second group were derby side Sporting, wild cards Amahlubi and Fairleigh United and newcomers, New Stars, with the tournament to be played on a round robin basis.
From these, the two top teams in each group advanced to the semi-finals.
Currently, Stella leads Group A ahead of Al-Ahly and Emathekini, while the Group B leader is Fairleigh United, with Amahlubi and Sporting making up the top three.
The tournament will continue this weekend.
Organisers said it was near impossible to predict who was the favourite for the tourney crown, as both Stella and Fairleigh United have proved dominant, and Al-Ahly butchered Spartans after an opening loss.
Next week, the NSSL kicks off officially – contact Mervyn Maharaj on 076 659 7295 for more information.
