NEWCASTLE – While some teenagers would cringe at the thought of sacrificing socialising with friends, Aiden Grobler is reaping the rewards of this very sacrifice.

The 16-year-old was recently selected for the National Bokkie Team, during the Afrikaner Volkseie held in Kroonstad.
“I was glad when I heard I was selected, although I was speechless at first,” he said.

Taking up the position of inside centre for the team, Aiden said training for rugby was continuous.
“I have always had a passion for rugby, the brotherhood of the team and the friends you make, but it is a lot of work. During the rugby season, you have to train up to four times a week and then it’s gym as well. When the rugby season is over, it is gym. You have to stay fit and on top form, which means you don’t always get time to socialise with friends.”
Although constantly pushing his body to the limit, Aiden said he did it because he loved the game.
“If you want something, you have to work for it. Also, it is not just about rugby the game. It is about sportsmanship and team work, because you can be the best player, it means nothing if you are not part of a team,” he emphasised.
Elated about his impending trip to Russia, Aiden wants to play rugby professionally once he completed school.
“I would like to play in Europe, but I also want to study something like engineering, as it is important to have something behind your name.”
Aiden encouraged others to pursue rugby as a sport.
“It builds character, friendships and teaches you discipline.”
