Gavin Dyer keeps batting for the love of cricket
His passion for cricket showed him the sport was not merely about the game, but that there were life lessons hidden on the pitch.
NEWCASTLE – Armed with a cricket bat and preparing to walk towards the pitch, Gavin Dyer is no stranger to the world of cricket.
“I started playing when I was 15 years old, and I love everything about the sport.”

His passion for cricket showed him the sport was not merely about the game, but that there were life lessons hidden on the pitch.
“It is a gentleman’s sport; it teaches you discipline and sportsmanship, how to be humble and show respect to others.”
Playing in the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) Spur Super Saturday League for the Highlands team, Gavin’s game is still going strong after 24 years on the pitch.
However, he has noticed a steady decline in the cricket world.
“We need to make a consorted effort to bring children back to cricket and make it more attractive for them.”
He commended NDCA for going the extra mile to popularise cricket among the youth.
One of the changes was allowing Young Warriors, a team consisting of predominately children, playing against older counterparts to gain more experience.
