He smashed 11 fours and two sixes in his knock of 114 runs.

Gori also played a brilliant innings of 81 at the top of the batting order, while Butt continued his tremendous touch with an impressive 51.

This helped Newcastle post a mighty 302 runs for six wickets in its allotted 50 overs.

Vryheid was threatening through its middle order but was pegged back by some accurate bowling from the Newcastle attack.

The local bowlers’ figures are as follows:

Graham Sharp bowled out one for 28; Sandile Hlatshwayo got one for 15; Braeden Coetzee ended with figures of two for 29; Saadiq Bhula had one for 28; Chris Ewart bowled one for 28; Ritesh Singh got one for 21; John Clark scalped one for no runs and; Aslan Butt ended with two for seven.

Vryheid was dismissed for 149 runs, handing Newcastle an impressive 153 runs.

However, Vryheid will visit the Arbor Park grounds for the return leg on Sunday, and hopes to settle the score there.
