Being the only one chosen from the Northern Natal region, Matthew stands out as king of the pitch.
At the age of eight, Matthew discovered his passion for the sport. With the support and motivation of his family, he has not looked back.
His ultimate dream would be to play for the national cricket team as he aspires to be the next Quentin de Kock or David Miller.
Matthew has been representing his school’s cricket team in Vryheid, Utrecht and Dundee. He has also competed in the Amajuba District cricket league.
“It felt great to be selected to play for the KZN inland under-12 team,” beamed Matthew.
Gaining field experience at the recent Super Saturday cricket league was priceless to Matthew, as it afforded him invaluable exposure.
He utilised these skills, which enabled him to perform at his best in the KZN inland under-12 tournament held last week.
Although the task may have been daunting to a 12-year-old, going up against the best cricketers in his category on a provincial level, Matthew held his composure in the face of adversity.
“The competition was tough, but it was a good experience.”
His mother, Hayley Ponter said she was exceptionally proud of her son and his achievements.
“The adults in the cricket league were always supportive to young cricketers, and I am grateful Matthew had the opportunity to play on field,” said Mrs Ponter.
The encouragement he received from his parents and mentor, Amos Cassimjee, was unwavering and greatly appreciated.
Matthew wishes to pursue a professional cricketing career after he matriculates.
He imparts these wise words, which has motivated him through his cricketing journey: “Never give up and work as hard as you can. If you mess-up on the field, never drop your head.”
We wish Matthew well in his future endeavours!
