“I competed against approximately 30 swimmers, some of whom were national swimmers, so I am proud of the positions I took. It shows my work has paid off.”

NEWCASTLE – Varish Ramautar made waves to impress at the Westville Sprints in Durban from November 25 to November 27.

The 21-year-old swimmer took seventh place in the 50 metres butterfly, eighth in the 100 metres butterfly, second in the 50 metres breaststroke, fourth in the 50 metres freestyle and ninth in the 100 metres freestyle divisions.

“I competed against approximately 30 swimmers, some of whom were national swimmers, so I am proud of the positions I took. It shows my work has paid off,” he said.

While Newcastillians are preparing to unwind for the festive season, Varish will be training throughout the December holidays.

“I am setting my sights on the South African National Championships in April next year, and I would like to participate in all the categories I did in Westville, and get faster times.”

As Varish prepares for the upcoming championships, he said none of his success would have been possible without his couch, Tharina Peters, and his mother, Shanitha Ramautar.

“Tharina helps me reach my potential, while my mother ensures I stay in peak physical health.”
