Outcome of fishing competitions difficult to predict

The season has been a very exciting one thus far, as the outcome of each competition is difficult to predict, making for an interesting season going forward into the new year

The fourth round of the VME League was held at Richgate Park on December 11.

With the league so tightly contested, the teams were out to consolidate their positions. Ebrahim Mia of Challengers was the ‘Angler of the Day’, as he accumulated 48 points, winning both the ‘orange’ and ‘green’ caps as the overall leader in the Angling Professional League (APL). This is the most points an angler has scored in a single outing in the APL.

There were, however, other anglers who bagged some good catches on the day: Albert van Niekerk (Breakwaters – 40 points); Anil Boodhoo (Stillwaters – 37 points) and Janie Els (Breakwaters – 34 points). The top three anglers of the APL to date are Ebrahim Mia (65 points), followed by Fanie Els (47 points) and Anil Boodhoo (45 points).

Breakwaters accumulated an impressive 253 points, followed by Stillwaters on 200 points, Challengers with 185 points, Ladysmith with 83 points and Dannhauser with 45 points.

Breakwaters leads the VME League with 36 points, followed by Stillwaters on 28 points, Ladysmith with 24 points, Challengers on 23 points and Dannhauser with seven points.

The achievement of Stillwaters is commendable, as many of their anglers are fishing for the first time in competitive competitions; they also have some juniors and ladies in their team.

The season has been a very exciting one thus far, as the outcome of each competition is difficult to predict, making for an interesting season going forward into the new year.

The top five anglers of Breakwaters / Stillwaters for League 4 were: Albert van Niekerk (40 pts), Anil Boodhoo (37 pts), Fanie Els (34 pts), Mark Ince (26 pts) and Sipho Manyoni (23 pts).

The title contenders for Breakwaters / Stillwaters are: Vernon Naidoo (heaviest scaled fish – carp of 3.375kg); Sikander Amod (heaviest non-scaled fish – barbel of 6.9kg); Thasheel Rooplal (heaviest scaly of 1.210kg); Suvyn Budhoo (rare specie – a bass of 1.090kg); Fanie Els (Most Fish Caught and Angler of the Year); Albert van Niekerk (highest points scorer); Veruschka Boodhoo (Lady Angler of the Year – 20 points); Mohamed Sheik (Junior Angler of the Year – seven points); Kidd Rampersadh (Senior Angler of the Year – eight points).

Most of the other categories are closely contested as anglers stake their name for glory. Anglers took a break from competitive angling during the festive season.

The next APL fixture is the VME League 5 at Sandford on February 19.
