Luke Mayo clinches historic Northern KZN Open Golf trophy

Local golfer, Jurie Engelbrecht, led the field by one shot after the first 18 holes

The 88th Northern KwaZulu-Natal Open golf championship took place on Sunday at Dundee Country Club and attracted a large number of KZN’s best golfers in the field of 82 players.

Local golfer, Jurie Engelbrecht, led the field by one shot after the first 18 holes when recording a one-under par 70, over the favourite Luke Mayo from Mt .Edgecombe C.C. and Nikal Gopal from Victoria C.C.
However, Luke Mayo, playing off a +5 handicap, fought back strongly in the afternoon to card an excellent four under par 31 on the back nine to finish his 36 holes on 140, two under par for the day to clinch the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Open Trophy by one shot. Nikal Gopal finished second on 141 with Jurie Engelbrecht holding on to finish a creditable third with a level round of 142 for the tournament.
The B division was won on a total of 151 by Hagen Gevers from Vryheid G.C. with Dundee’s Sifiso Kunene being piped by one shot to finish in second position on 152.
