A triumphant week for Paradise

The Spur Super Saturday League final took place at Arbor Park grounds, where Paradise beat FNB Insurance Brokers Phoenix in one of the best finals to date.

The first half of the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) season ended on a high note, as Paradise came out victorious.

The Spur Super Saturday League final took place on January 15 at Arbor Park grounds, where Paradise beat FNB Insurance Brokers Phoenix in one of the best finals to date.

Paradise batted first and found itself in deep trouble on 24 runs for four wickets. A brilliant new ball spell from Graham Sharp who returned figures of two wickets for nine runs from his six overs, made early inroads.

A fifth wicket fell after a 56 run partnership between Aveer Chandraprakash and Paradise skipper, Renesh Harbhajan.

The pair worked tirelessly and took the score to 80 runs, before Harbhajan was dismissed for his contribution of 34 runs.

Chandraprakash stood firm and made his way to 36 runs before he was caught by Chris Ewart. The catch was momentous as Ewart dislocated his baby finger in the process.

Paradise closed on 130 runs.

Needing 131 runs for victory, Phoenix were rocked early by left arm seamer, Julian Daniels who claimed four wickets; Ruwayne Chetty (five), Graham Sharp (nil),

John Clark (two) and Deon van Rooyen (nil), which left Phoenix on 18 runs for four out.

Riaan Kritzinger was out after making six runs, while Johan Ferreira and Nico-Jan Chowles repaired some of the damage with a valuable partnership of 25. Chowles (29) and Drikus Ferreira (nil), departed in quick succession before Ewart made his way to the crease with a broken finger.

With 56 runs and seven wickets down, the end was nigh for Phoenix, but Ewart and Ferreira fought back with a stand of 49 runs. Dangerous Daniels returned for another key spell of bowling.

Ferreira was bowled for 32 while Ewart’s gutsy knock of 29 was ended by Harbhajan.

Daniels was the star of the show, with figures of five for 18 from his six overs, the pace bowler had answered the call for his team.

Phoenix were finally dismissed for 112 which gave Paradise the win by 18 runs.

Paradise also received the Johan Ferreira Night League Plate for beating Lennoxton in a one-sided final last week.

Eagle Peak Spur rewarded individual performances at a post match presentation.

Arslan Butt and Ritesh Singh from team Lennoxton, were named batsman and bowler of the tournament, while Warriors were acknowledged for their great work and bagged the Spirit award.

Congratulations Paradise, on a great win!

The NDCA would like to thank Elmar Gouws and Eagle Peak Spur for their involvement this season, as well as Pastor Steve Francis and Stan Coates who umpired the final match.

Look out for these upcoming events:

Trevor Smith Shield, KFC Night League and Perfect Water 6-a-side competitions which are scheduled for the next three months.
