Bowls masters take to the greens

In extremely hot conditions, the bowlers acquitted themselves on good playing surfaces thanks to the sterling efforts of greenkeeper, Sid Price.

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted the 2017 KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls Masters Singles Championships last weekend, where the 12 men and 12 women who had qualified according to the selection criteria, participated.

In extremely hot conditions, the bowlers acquitted themselves on good playing surfaces thanks to the sterling efforts of greenkeeper, Sid Price.

After five rounds of sectional play, the women’s section winners were Nan Roos (Dundee: 8 + 31) and Noela Dreyer (Vryheid: 6 + 8), setting up an all-Northerns final.

The final proved to be an entertaining affair, with peels called on five, seven, eight, nine, 13, 17 and 19, before Nan picked up the brace required to win the game and annex the Masters title.

The men’s sections were won by Theuns Fraser (The Nest: 10 + 31) and Tony de Pooter (Volksrust: 8 + 24).

In the final, Theuns gave a masterly display of bowls worthy of a past t where all four KZN bowling districts, namely Port Natal, Natal Inland, Kingfisher and KZNCB play against each other.

Springbok and current Springbok coach, to beat a gallant Tony, who had in turn played some superb shots.

He was just outgunned by the ever-consistent Theuns.

The KZNCB Inter District Open, B, Senior and President teams travel to Pietermaritzburg this weekend, to participate in the annual KZN Quadrangular tournamen

This is really preparation for the South African Inter Districts tournaments, which take place in March.
