30-over league in full swing in Ladysmith

With the past week’s rain, cricket triumphed over the elements with the start of the DN Domun Memorial 30-over tournament. Both scheduled matches at the Settlers Park grounds on Sunday, December 3, were played, with the teams raring to go.
Play got off to a late start on Sunday morning, with the morning’s match seeing Wanderers and K&L African United pitted against each other for the tournament’s opening match. After the delay of waiting for the pitch to dry up and with the game being reduced to 15 overs, Wanderers won the toss and elected to bat.
Losing two wickets in the first over of the match, Faraaz Khan put the pressure on the Wanderers batting line-up very early.
Akhthar Hoosen was joined by Ahmed Kharva to set about a recovery, doing so with a 100-run partnership.
Wanderers ended up setting a target of 166, with A Kharva top scoring with 84, with contributions from A Hoosen (27) and S Mathuraparsad (24).
K&L African United could not get off to the start they hoped for, losing star batsman Shaun Fourie in the fifth over. A good bowling performance by Wanderers, with Shamal Mathuraparsad taking three for 20, saw K&L African United losing regular wickets.
Gerald Juggiah kept the fight going by managing to make 43 runs, with a late flurry by Thami Mcineko scoring 28 not out. K&L fell short of the target, ending up on 122 for five wickets.
The afternoon match saw Callies take on Kings XI. Kings XI won the toss, electing to bat, and were in all sorts of trouble when they lost their star batsman Abed Hussan in the second over of the match. From then on, it was all Callies as the bowlers ran through their opponents, with wickets falling at random, eventually being bowled out for 126 runs.
Pick of the bowlers was Dylan Fischer who picked up four wickets.
Chasing 127 for victory, Callies got off to a good start. Protus Zakwe and Ashlin Ramdayal opened the batting, with the pair putting on a 60-run partnership for the first wicket.
