Masters emerge from district contests

Competition was extremely fierce and excellent bowls was witnessed throughout the weekend.

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted the KZNCB (KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls) Emerging Masters Singles Tournament over the weekend, with 12 men and women bowlers from the district competing for the chance to qualify for the major Masters competition, which is to be held in May.

Competition was extremely fierce and excellent bowls was witnessed throughout the weekend.

Des Maartens (Klipbank) won Section A (8 +) with Marie Botha (Newcastle: 6 + 20) the worthy runner-up.

Section B was a cliff-hanger with Lindsay Steele (Newcastle: 6 + 22) recording an excellent 21 – 4 victory in her final game to edge out Alta de Kock (Vryheid: 6 + 21).

Section A of the Men’s Division was won by Brendan van Vreden (Piet Retief: 6 + 30).

In Section B, Neil Singh (Klipbank) and Douglas Steele (Newcastle) both went into their last games with 6 + 24.
Douglas went on to win his final game 21 – 14, while Neil also won his game 21 – 13, thus winning the section by the odd shot.

All players are to be congratulated on the quality of their bowls, and the spirit in which the games were played.

The penultimate round of the FedAuto Business League will be played this Thursday night, with a number of teams still in contention to top their respective sections.

The South African Inter-Districts competitions get underway on Monday next week.

The Open A Teams will play in Johannesburg, the B Teams in Cape Town and the Senior Teams in the Sables bowling district (Gauteng).
