NEWCASTLE KZN: Gato’s advice for training and fitness at home

With minimal expense, Gato says anyone can have a full body workout from the comfort of their home.

With South Africa currently in the grip of a second wave of Covid-19, keeping one’s body and mind fit and healthy has probably never been more important.

Gym owner, ‘Gato’ Swanepoel believes that sticking to a training routine, whether you work out in a gym or at home, may save your life. He says regular exercise and building muscle both give a person more chance to fight off illness and survive trauma.

“Exercise also keeps your mind strong and improves your mood. We all feel negative hearing about so many deaths and wondering if we will be next – exercise keeps the brain healthy through endorphin release.”

Gato’s recommended equipment for working out in the comfort and safety of your own home:
  1. Resistance bands
  2. A Pilates ball
  3. Weights – one set of kettle bells or dumbbells
  4. A training mat

Gato said this basic set will only set a person back around R1 000 and is available from some local retailers. For this expense, he stated it was possible to enjoy a full body workout every day without leaving your house.

“All the information you need is on the Internet; search for home training and you can’t go wrong. If you’re still unsure, ask a friend for advice. With this equipment, why would you need anything more?”

Gato concludes with his emphatic message: don’t stop training as it may save your life down the line.
