The Newcastle Highlanders Rugby Club has welcomed its players back on the field after a long hiatus due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Players were overjoyed to be back in action at the Arbor Park sports ground last week.

Head coach, Andre Swanepoel said the practice session was challenging as a result of the protocols that needed to be followed.

“Our practice was essentially a stop-and-start affair, as players and equipment had to be sanitised after every activity,” he explained.

He admitted, however, that he was ‘chuffed’ at the turnout of 18 players, as it showed they still cultivated a passion and love of the sport.

“Players were excited when the President announced we were heading into Alert Level 1. They are hoping this means we will soon be able to enjoy friendly games with other clubs,” he chuckled.

Swanepoel has called on all local rugby enthusiasts to join the Highlanders every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm at the Highlanders Rugby Club in Arbor Park.
