NEWCASTLE KZN: Wrestling tournament cancelled due to rising Covid-19 cases
Due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in the country, the Legends Cup has been called off.
The Legends Cup, a wrestling contest scheduled for Youth Day (June 16), has been cancelled.
Surette van der Linde, marketer for the Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club, said the decision was made due to the high number of Covid-19 infections in South Africa at present. The tournament would have featured wrestlers from Newcastle, Glencoe, Volksrust and as far as Richards Bay and Durban.
Van der Linde has still encouraged prospective wrestlers, from as young as six years old, to join the club and follow in the footsteps of local legends such as Danie de Wet and his son Eric, who have both represented South Africa in international wresting tournaments.
“If you say wrestling, people think it’s WWE where you get to fight in a ring with chairs and all that for show. Wrestling is what you achieve on your own as a wrestler – nobody else can achieve that for you.”
