WATCH: Vryheid first and second teams secure victories

Vryheid Rugby Club celebrates first and second team victories over visiting Volksrust.

Vryheid Rugby Club gave home fans plenty to cheer about over the weekend as both the first and second teams secured victories against visiting Volksrust, defending their home turf with pride and physicality.

First team overcomes early pressure

The highly anticipated first-team clash proved to be an intense and physical affair from the opening whistle. Volksrust drew first blood, applying early scoreboard pressure by slotting two penalties in the opening quarter to put the hosts on the back foot.

Vryheid remained composed though, eventually finding their rhythm and answering with two brilliantly worked tries. Not to be outdone, Volksrust struck back with a try of their own just before the break, leaving the game hanging in the balance with Vryheid holding a narrow 14-11 lead at half-time.

Second-half dominance seals victory

After the break, the Vryheid machine finally shifted out of first gear. Showcasing a rock-solid defence and a far more direct, punishing attacking strategy, the home side took complete control of the match. Vryheid shut out the visitors for the remainder of the game, piling on 31 unanswered points in the second half to cruise to a comprehensive 45-11 victory.

Young second team rises to the challenge

Earlier in the day, the second team set the tone for the weekend with an absolute nail-biter. Featuring a squad brimming with young talent, the curtain-raiser was characterised by its chaotic, high-octane pace from start to finish.

The youthful energy on the field led to an unpredictable and highly entertaining game. Ultimately, the young Vryheid men showed immense grit, holding their nerve to edge out Volksrust in a thrilling 29-25 win.
