Madiba passed away at 8.50pm on Thursday evening

Breaking News: Nelson Mandela, the  icon of the anti-apartheid struggle in  South Africa and one of the towering political figures of the 20th  century, has died.

Former president Nelson Mandela passed away last night at the age of 95. Programmes on SABC were interrupted at 11.45pm for the live announcement by President Jacob Zuma.

Madiba passed away at 8.50pm on Thursday evening.

South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed the news. “He is now resting. He is now at peace,” Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”

Mandela’s death comes months after his 95 birthday. Nelson Mandela is survived by his wife Graca Machel, his former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and three daughters Pumla Makaziwe, Zenani and Zindziswa Mandela.
