When councillors were presented with the municipality’s turnaround strategy last Wednesday, incredulous looks passed around the table.
Hands shot up when Speaker of Council Cesar Nunes announced it was time for questions and clarifications.
Immediately councillors pointed out a number of faults, one councillor even calling a section of the report a “lie.”
They said it was plain to see that 80 percent of the town’s potholes were not repaired and contrary to the report, construction at Madondo Bridge had not yet begun, let alone 95 percent complete.
While the department directors defended their statistics, councillors demanded that a written account of how they arrived at the figures be presented at the next council meeting.
In closing one councillor commented that Umtshezi Municipality needed to evaluate the projects they undertake and ascertain whether they have the capacity to complete the task, or else, he said “it will come back to haunt us.”
