Oscar and Reeva – will we ever know the truth?

The important fact is not the case itself, but the opening of our judicial system to public scrutiny

On Monday, March 3, the biggest trial in recent South African history took off with a bang. We were all treated to a South African first, live video streaming from an actual court case.

And there it is, the crux of the whole case against Oscar laid bare in all its boring technical detail. Experts will come and go as we watch our legal system (supposedly at its best) ramble on.

Mind-numbing boredom will set in as we wait for each perfect sound bite.

But for me, the important fact is not the case itself, but the opening of our judicial system to public scrutiny, not just here in South Africa but for the world to see.

I am sure more cases will follow this one onto our TV screens; Shrien Dewani would be a clear candidate and so would any high-power political case. Pandora’s Box has been opened; one wonders where it will lead.

At Caxton, every story is written by humans. We use AI only to perform quality checks - never to generate the news. Happy reading!
