A historic event took place in Estcourt on Saturday, August 9.
To mark Women’s Day, a Community Woman of the Year event was held at the Estcourt Town Hall.
It was an initiative undertaken by Project Life, which is a learning facility for children with mental, learning and physical disabilities.
11 women from a spectrum of careers and backgrounds were nominated and I am honoured to be amongst them.
The community was encouraged to vote for the woman of their choice via nominations forms or SMS’s.
Come Saturday, although the weather was awful, nominees, guests and well wishers gathered at the hall for the glittering function.
Once the motivational speeches from the nominees were done and dusted, we waited anxiously for the results to be released.
It came as a great surprise when traffic officer Nafisa Gunkel and myself were named Community Women of the Year.
What an absolute honour, privilege and a humbling experience.
Thank you to everyone, who supported me through my ten years at the Estcourt and Midlands News, may we continue telling the stories that have to be heard.
