Celebrate Women’s Day in Wakkerstroom

American popular music from the 1930’s reflects the cultural and social conditions that shaped the American identity during this period. Hard economic times and social conflict have always offered a rich source of material for artists and writers. A musician can express the tensions and uncertainty of a world in struggle.

Alike to the general world economic crisis today, the Great Depression created an atmosphere for artistic imagination and creative expression. The common feeling of struggle also led millions of Americans in search of new art forms for relief from their day-to-day cares.

“Roaring 30’s” represent the most popular sound of the nineteen-thirties – that of Swing and Broadway Musical Theatre hits written by the likes of Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Jerome Kern. In later years the music of the thirties was revisited and made widely popular by artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.

“Roaring 30’s” with the well-known artists from Pretoria, Linette van der Merwe (mezzo), Chris Mostert (tenor) and Ferdi Geyer behind the piano, will take you back to this period which was also called “The Restless Decade”, the start of Art Deco, glamorous and sensuous fashion, the era of the big bands, dancing and night life, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo and Bette Davis. Come and swing to songs like “I got Rhythm”, “Begin the Beguine”, “Night and Day”, and “Someone to watch over me”.

Ticket prices are R180 per person, which includes a light luncheon. Bookings are essential.
