GOING AWAY? Here are some useful precautions for your pets

Going away for the festive season is very exciting, but don’t forget your responsibilities as a pet owner in the process.

Here is some advice from the Newcastle SPCA on how to make sure your furry babies are taken care of while you take your much deserved break.

1. Arrange with a neighbour or family member to feed and check up on your pets while you are away.

2. Have someone house sit for you; in that way your animals still get attention while you’re not there.

3. Make sure your yard is closed off properly. You wouldn’t want them wandering into the streets and getting lost, or caught up in a storm.

4. Make sure the person looking after your pets has all  your preferred vet’s details, just in case of an emergency.

5. Before you leave, make sure there is enough food and water available for your pets.

6. Make sure you arrange well ahead of time to have your pets cared for. Don’t wait until last minute!

7. The SPCA has boarding facilities available where your pets can stay while you’re not here.

8. Self feeders are fine to use if you’re only going away for the weekend, not for longer holidays.

9. Don’t leave your pets confined to the house. Leave a small window open so they can get fresh air.

10. If your vacation falls over New Years Eve, please make sure the person looking after your pet takes precautions. Advise them to give the pets calming medication to help them relax throughout the noise.
