Ladysmith woman has a passion for crocheting

She either sells what she makes or donates the items to charities

52-year-old Marie van Zijl has had a passion for crocheting ever since she was a young girl. Being a qualified nurse and now at home, she enjoys picking up her needles and making a variety of lovely items.

Born in Durban and raised in Ladysmith, she is a well-known community member in our small town.

Marie makes hats, scarves and head bands, as well as other accessories.

She either sells what she makes or donates the items to charities.

The Ladysmith Gazette asked Marie how long it takes her to crochet a hat… “It all depends on my mood, I guess.

I can take less than half an hour or more, but when I’m busy with my crocheting, I put my all into making it the best,” enthuses Marie.

Having also made many different coloured handbags, she believes that using the best and most expensive wool will result in a better product at the end of the day. “I have made such a wide variety of different stuff out of wool, and my talent seems to fascinate all my friends and family,” laughs Marie.
