Do we wait for a hero or do we save ourselves from the evil empire?

Maybe it's time for us to stop waiting for saving to come along and save us

Have you ever read a novel or watched a movie and thought, ‘this story is crazy, even bordering on unbelievable.’

There may be witches, wizards, dragons or even demons present, but that’s not actually the unbelievable part. The unbelievable part is how there always seems to one major hurdle or one central bad guy that the heroes have to overcome. A bad guy who only thinks about himself, one who doesn’t care who dies and what burns, as long as he gets his way.

The evil force/ dark lord/ bad guy never gets his hands dirty himself, but always has his minions/ cronies to do his bidding. (One exception is Lord Voldemort, who wasn’t afraid to get stuck in and dispose of his enemies himself.)

The minions/ cronies also don’t have any regard for human life and well-being and rob, pillage and plunder with gay abandon. The story itself always reaches a point where you think there’s no hope left and then steps forward a hero to save the day. A hero to banish the darkness, to bring peace back to the people and to help slay the evil entities destroying the nation.

Sadly, the South African story is a bit different. Our heroes, who once freed us from the oppressive evil forces of the past, have since passed on and a new terror now stalks the lands.
An evil, that like many bad guys, once fought for the same principles, before going rogue and only thinking about himself.

The bad guy in this story has shadowed the land in such a darkness, that everywhere you look, the evil is all around you. Crime is out of control, as thieves, murderers and rapists run rough shot, defiant of the law that is supposed to govern. The law too has seen better days.

With the exception of a few good men, the people put in place to curb crime, now only seem to help it spread. Now, in the time of our darkest hour, that point in the story when all hope is almost lost, who will step forward to save us?

Where is the hero? Maybe it’s time for us to stop waiting for saving to come along and save us, but rather to stand up, make our voices heard and save ourselves.
