Vryheid orphan defies the odds, obtaining 24 distinctions at UniZulu

He said discipline propelled him to achieve great marks, not only at the university, but also in matric, where he obtained seven distinctions.

LOCAL intellect, Sizwe Maguni, had social media abuzz, with locals extending congratulatory messages, when he graduated with 24 distinctions to his name last week.

This 23-year-old was among the top achievers in the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand

Maguni, who is originally from Vryheid and completed his matric at Hlobane’s Gelekedle Secondary School, lost both his parents when he was just a year old.

The young man attributes his great achievements to his late aunt, who always urged him to work hard, as well as the educators at Gelekedle who have been by his side throughout his journey.

‘They have always believed in me. They kept in constant contact with me during my studies at university and supported me with finances as I was severely lacking in that area,” said Sizwe.

Although he did astoundingly well, Sizwe admitted to having not expected to do so well as he found English and Geography to be difficult majors.

He said discipline propelled him to achieve great marks, not only at the university, but also in matric, where he obtained seven distinctions.
